Micky says...Unfriend
Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 2:18PM Unfriend is the word of the year!, states the New Oxford American Dictionary.
Funny, while typing, it comes up as a misspelling. But that’s probably because it is the new word of the year.
What does that tell us about the year 2009? Was it such a bad year? Did we get so caught up in our own lives that the only way to make a statement is through Facebook where we befriend and unfriend whenever we please?
But what does unfriend really mean? Do we not want to be friends anymore? Were we ever? Or is it that we are so eager to get more and more friends on Facebook that we don't really consider it. And without thinking, driven by our ego, just tap the "friend" button for anybody.
I’m guilty of the above. As a late bloomer, I only started using Facebook last spring. My assistant set it up for me and we clicked friend...friend...friend... all the time. Except for the really scary looking older men that only had hot looking babes as friends. No, not those.
By summer I realized fully what the consequences were. Some TV host used my Facebook to make a juicy gossip story. Completely ignoring the fact that a ‘friend’ would never use it for that purpose. So there, I unfriended for the first time. And with her some more...and more...and more!
Unfriending has nothing to do with traditional friendships. They will always be there. Unfriend is just to say: Go and get your own life!
